Exchanging full metadata item content between items, including filename, is a very easy task with the help of the EditInfoFields batch tool.

If indeed you need to pre-process the content in order to use only the firsts 5 letters you need to use the export/import trick mentioned in the post above yours.
Export the grid to a .csv file, process it in MS Excell, or any other tool able to work with table text files, and import it again into PDFE.

You can also use my other tool, PDF-ShellTools, command line interface.

You just need to create a batch/script file to manipulate the metadata the way you pretend and them set it in the file itself.

Does anyone know if there's a way to IMPORT metadata from the FILENAME?

--> the first 5 letters of the filename should be imported as some kind of document number as metadata.. might also be as title or sth. like that, doesn't matter.. as long as there's a way to put it some place ELSE but in the filename!

such as this tag I copy from Pubmed.
Do you mean, automatically? PDFE can only import metadata from the PDF file itself, from .csv files, or from the PDF text content when there is the possibility to develop a regular expression to isolate the metadata. If you find a way to gather these tags with some utility and edit/create csv files you can easily import it into PDFE database and PDF files metatags, to standard or custom fields.

AB - IL-17 is the hallmark cytokine of the newly described "Th17" lymphocyte population. The composition, subunit dynamics, and ligand contacts of the IL-17 receptor are poorly defined. We previously demonstrated that the IL-17RA subunit oligomerizes in the membrane without a ligand. In this study, computational modeling identified two fibronectin-III-like (FN) domains in IL-17RA connected by a nonstructured linker, which we predicted to mediate homotypic interactions. In yeast two-hybrid, the membrane-proximal FN domain (FN2), but not the membrane-distal domain (FN1), formed homomeric interactions. The ability of FN2 to drive ligand-independent multimerization was verified by coimmunoprecipitation and fluorescence resonance energy transfer microscopy. Thus, FN2 constitutes a "pre-ligand assembly domain" (PLAD). Further studies indicated that the FN2 linker domain contains the IL-17 binding site, which was never mapped. However, the FN1 domain is also required for high affinity interactions with IL-17. Therefore, although the PLAD is located entirely within FN2, effective ligand binding also involves contributions from the linker and FN1.
